CEFR Levels Explained: A Simple Guide for Italian Students in Sri Lanka
If you have looked at any Italian language course, you have encountered the letters A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. These are the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages — the international standard that defines language ability consistently across countries and languages. Here is what they actually mean for Italian learners in Sri Lanka.
What is the CEFR?
The CEFR was developed by the Council of Europe and is now used by language schools, universities, and employers worldwide to assess and describe language ability. It applies to all languages — Italian, French, Spanish, English — and allows meaningful comparisons between different qualifications and courses.
The Six CEFR Levels for Italian
A1 — Beginner
You can introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions about personal details, understand basic phrases when spoken slowly and clearly. You can order food, ask for directions, and handle very familiar situations.
Realistic timeline: 3–4 months with weekly lessons (60–80 hours total).
A2 — Elementary
You can communicate in routine tasks requiring a simple exchange of information. You can describe your background, immediate environment, and matters of immediate need. Travel in Italy is comfortable.
Realistic timeline: 6–8 months from zero (120–150 hours total).
B1 — Intermediate
You can handle most situations likely to arise while travelling in Italy. You can produce simple connected text on familiar topics. You can describe experiences, events, dreams, and ambitions.
Realistic timeline: 12–18 months from zero (300–400 hours total).
B2 — Upper Intermediate
You can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics. You can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible.
Realistic timeline: 2–3 years from zero (500–600 hours total).
C1 — Advanced
You can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. You can use Italian flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes.
Realistic timeline: 3–5 years from zero (700–900 hours total).
C2 — Mastery
You can understand with ease virtually everything you read or hear in Italian. You can express yourself spontaneously, very fluently, and precisely. This is the level of an educated native speaker.
Realistic timeline: 5+ years of dedicated study and immersion.
Which Level Should You Aim For?
For most Sri Lankan learners, B1 is the transformative milestone — the level at which Italy becomes fully accessible as a travel destination and Italian culture becomes genuinely open to you. B2 is the level required by most Italian universities for international students.
